This two inch memorial coin honors the life and legacy of Flint Police Captain Collin Birnie. He died February 4, 2022 as the result of a traffic crash while on duty. Captain Birnie served with the Flint Police Department for 26 years.
Captain Birnie served on the executive board of the Police Officers Labor Council and was the President of Flint Captains and Lieutenants Association. A union member since 1996, he had also served as steward, secretary and treasurer of the Captains and Lieutenants Association. As Captain he was in charge of Special Operations and Identification Bureaus. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1988-1992. During his military service, he was assigned to Security Force Company and an Infantry Battalion. He also participated in Operation Desert Shield and Storm. He received an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Mott Community College. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Capt. Birnie is survived by his wife, Tina, two daughters and two granddaughters.
